Labyrinth on the big screen

The boyfriend had been asking me to go and see Avengers: Infinity Wars with him basically forever, and now that it was in the theater, he really wanted me to go. The thing is - I have zero desire to see superhero movies. I'm a strange kind of nerd, I guess, and the superhero thing just never attracted me (other than Dean Cain playing Superman in the 90's, because that was amazing). The truth is, I don't know who any of these superheroes even are, and I somehow have no desire to even learn about them. I love that Jeremy's favorite superhero is Superman, because I know who that one is, and I can buy him things accordingly... but in general? No idea. And honestly, no real desire to learn anything about them.

It worked out perfectly, though, that my sister-in-law invited me to go see Labyrinth with her last night, and I was able to convince Jeremy to go see his movie while we saw ours - especially when she was able to snag him a free ticket. As it turns out, he was disappointed in the movie, and said he would have felt guilty had he made me sit through it because he knew I would have hated it - so hooray for that working out! Yes, you did read that right. My boyfriend was the only person I know of who was disappointed. Our friends on Facebook have told him to shut up when he said that it was too long - meanwhile I'm laughing, and am glad that I dodged the superhero bullet.

I'm especially glad that dodging that bullet meant seeing Labyrinth on the big screen. Labyrinth is one of those movies that somehow defines my childhood. I wanted to be Sarah, and have these amazing creature friends (mostly Sir Didymus and Ambrosius, if I'm being entirely honest - and it's probably one of the reasons I've always loved Old English Sheepdogs). I also whispered to my sister-in-law that if I ever have a baby, it is most definitely going to need red-and-white-striped pajamas in every single size possible, because my baby will be dressed like Toby as much as possible.

The theater seemed to mostly be filled with people in my general age range, who like me probably grew up with the movie and could recite just about every single line, despite my not having watched it in quite a while. There were also young kids, though, whose parents are clearly doing a fine job in raising them by making them watch such cinematic masterpieces. The woman next to me was telling us that she had fallen in love with the movie almost thirty years ago when she was a teenager (which made her about fifteen years older than me), and how she made sure to watch it at least once per year. Her reaction to Ludo's roar could have fooled me though, because she seemed entirely shocked by the sound, saying "I forgot about this part!" It's Ludo! He's amazing! How did you forget about him?

The energy in the theater was great, but I was a little surprised that people weren't more into it. I was expecting a group of people to be singing along (my shyness prevented me from being that person). Perhaps a bouncing ball across the bottom of the screen, encouraging movie-goers to sing along with David Bowie?

Nonetheless, seeing a childhood favorite in the theater was amazing. I am so grateful that my sister-in-law saw that it was playing, and invited me to come along!

Should you need us... <3

  1. I share your utter uninterest in superhero movies. They seem dumb to me. And I equally share your appreciation of other genres. Labyrinth is a great film. (And Bowie is one of my all-time favorites.)

    1. Labyrinth is so great, isn't it?!

I feel bad for not being into the superhero stuff, because the boyfriend really is... my brother and sister in law are also pretty into it (they saw the new avengers movie on Thursday, I believe it was - which I'm pretty sure was opening night). I feel bad because the stuff I like is admittedly SO DORKY, but it's just a different kind of dorky.

I did sit through Ghostbusters with him though (like, the original one that came out in the 80's) because it's his all-time favorite movie. I'd seen it as a kid, but only vaguely remembered it, so I actually sat through it with him. Didn't care about it either way, but I have to be that good girlfriend now and again, right? :-P

  2. I also have no desire to see the Avengers. I haven't seen any Superhero movie since the original Superman. I do LOVE Labyrinth. We used to make believe we were in the movie when I was babysitting my neighbors back in the day. I was always Sarah :) And I also agree with you on Dean Kane in that TV show!

    1. One time, I met a guy on a dating site, after somewhere in my profile saying that I liked that show... and this guy messaged me like "some people say I look like Dean Cain."

And I laughed, and laughed, and laughed. I was like "Who?!"
